Radio Play : Cast Out : Behind the Scenes

With little prospect of performing drama in the Garrison Theatre Lesley Leslie and Jennie Atkinson prepared another historical Radio Play which was premiered on BBC Radio Shetland as part of their Autumn season.

Work started on a cold windy day in April when Jennie and Lesley walked the area of Gaths at Quendale. Lesley knew well the history of the clearances in this area and they both thought this would make a great basis for telling the stories of the real people and what they experienced.

Once Lesley had the basis of the script Morag Maver undertook to do the research and Jennie was able to start pulling the individual scenes together.

The play was again recorded online which involves each member of the cast in their own home (from Northmavine, Tingwall, Lerwick, Cunningsburgh, and Bigton!) and connected via zoom. Each has a microphone which records their lines and they hear the other lines through the headphones. Everything is directed by Jennie from her home ensuring that each scene is recorded accurately. She also recorded and mixed voices for the crowd scenes which was a new venture for her. Jennie also sought sound effects to enable the listener to identify with the different scenes.

Following the recording, Jennie has to listen to every individual part to ensure it has recorded properly and each recording is labelled in order to allow the mixing to be undertaken.

Amber Thomson played the music which again was recorded by Jennie.

We are indebted to Molly Williams (Water Dog Reels) for undertaking this work for us. Firstly she makes the audio for Radio Shetland and later prepares the audio with photographs (again provided by Jennie) for our YouTube Channel.
