Behind The Scenes : The Crucible : Make Up

We were absolutely delighted that Babs Clubb joined us again for this production. Many of the characters in the play are arrested and spend time in the jail and Babs made us look truly awful in terms of bruises and bloody gashes!

We are hugely indebted to Babs for her amazing talent and ability to calmly get us all made up and on time. This must have been a huge challenge given the numbers involved and that many of us had to be "bruised and bloodied" quite late into the performance.

Babs kindly agreed to let me photograph the steps in making up Morag (Elizabeth Proctor) so  you can see how it all came together. But keep scrolling down to see how many of us got the "Babs" treatment!

The Start .....

Adding in different colours for long standing bruises - mauves and yellows.

Blending in colours around the eyes.

Adding the blood - this amazing liquid dried to look as close to blood as is possible!

Then on to the wrists as we also wore shackles.

Again a range of colours to create the bruises.

Adding in fine detail.

And finally the blood!

So realistic!

Complete and ready to go on stage.

Other characters with their make up - all so wonderfully different!

Martha Corey (Morag Maver)

Rebecca Nurse (Jennie Atkinson)

Sarah Good (Joyce Williamson)

Tituba (Charity Johnson)

John Proctor (Cameron Mackenzie)

Some characters required additional make up

Jennie Atkinson as Rebecca Nurse had to look 72 ........

This was the base before the lines and shading were added.

The male characters were not exempt! Kevin Briggs as the Deputy Governor and Andy Kinnear as the Judge with ageing make up (slightly less than in the case of Rebecca!).

Stanley Manson as Giles Corey

Thanks again Babs and we look forward to working with you again soon.
