KinderTransport : Behind the Scenes : Costumes and Characters

KinderTransport is a two Act play for a small number of characters, five females and four males but is set over two eras, 1939 and 1980. The Female Characters: Jennie Atkinson (Lil), Stephenie Georgia (Helga), Mandy Philips (Evelyn), Nicola Fleck (Faith) and Martha Robertson (Eva). Our Costume Co-ordinator Fiona Smith was able to source most of our costumes from our extensive Wardrobe with the earlier era being original costumes. The play starts in 1939 with Eva (Martha), aged nine and continues with Eva's life in England up to the age of 17. This is the only costume Martha changed into in the dressing room, the rest being quick changes in the wings. All her costumes were original (and you might recognise this dress from Thrill of Love!). Eva's mother Helga (Stephenie) required two costumes, one for when she was an elegant German mother as seen here in an original dress from the 1930s to wearing dark ill fitting clothes after the war having survived the concentration camps. KinderTransport : Behind the Scenes : Set Design and Construction

Now the production is over and the Garrison Theatre handed back it's time to share how it all came together in our Behind the Scenes blog posts. First up is Set Design and Construction This was Robin Atkinson's first large set design and construction working with Director Morag Mouat from the outset. The modern part of the play (1980) took part in an attic with the historic scenes (1939) on the front of the stage. One character, Lil, had to walk between the eras and so access was needed between the two sets. Before rehearsals stated Robin built a concept model to scale so that Morag could ensure the blocking of actors moves would fit the set when built. The areas of the steps were marked out with tape at every rehearsal in the Drama Room at Islesburgh so the actors became familiar with the different levels even though they were not walking up and down steps. Behind The Scenes : The Crucible : Wardrobe

It's the turn of Wardrobe to take centre stage tonight. Although our Director set The Crucible in a Shetland/Scottish context the action still took place in the late 16th Century. Martine Hall was the Director's historical researcher and Fiona Smith, our costume designer also spent time researching the costumes of the period. Feet were a huge concern with the young girls undoubtedly being barefoot at the time and Babs Club provided a fabulous bottle of "MUD" which was used to spray feet and which was also daubed on the bottom of nightdresses and dresses. Older characters wore Rivelins which were researched by Martine and made by her. They were amazingly comfortable! The colours of woven fabric of the day were researched by Fiona and many were found in our extensive wardrobe. The mustard colour overcostume worn by Goody Putnum (Mandy Phillips) has seen many an outing in plays and pantos but worked well with a black undergarment and cap. Linen...
