Moriarty : Behind the Scenes : 221B Baker Street

Designing a stage set for Mareel is not easy given its huge width and shallow depth, but the set for Moriarty designed by Robin Atkinson worked extremely well and allowed Morag as director to utilise various areas of the stage given the wide range of settings within the play.

The set for 221B Baker Street occupied a large area on stage right and required at times to accommodate four members of the cast. It required to be sturdy but straight forward and quick to erect, given the limited time to build at Mareel.

Robin started out with a model which as you can see developed perfectly into the final set.

Robin also managed to pull together a video which shows how this part of the set came into being - built at our Workshop in Gremista.

Many hours were spent on the detail: the bookcase for example. Each book spine individually painted by Robin!

The fireplace too : from model conception to final build. The whole fireplace is made from wood,  with the design based on an original of similar period here in Shetland. The tiles around the fireplace were hand painted by Robin again using originals for the design.

The walls were decorated using stencils as we couldn't risk damage getting the set into Mareel - Robin thought it easier to be able to touch up paint rather than torn wallpaper. The wood panelling and worn floor were also created with paint effects.

All in all an amazing detailed set. One member of the audience was heard to say "I just wanted to go and sit in the chair in Baker Street ........"
