Calendar Girls : Behind the Scenes : The Set

The beautiful set which moved from Church Hall to John's Hill was designed by David Grieve and built and painted by Sarah Burgess, Cheryl Cluness, David Grieve, Jim Grant, Graeme Maver and Donna Simpson.

The backdrop photograph which set the scene so beautifully was "Fields and Barn near Kettlewell by Chris Holifield (hosted on Geograph).

The clarity and the detail in the photograph was quite amazing!

The stile was used in both Acts to move everyone from the Hill ..... it was a sturdy build and had to take a bit of a punishing with the six Calendar Girls climbing over it many times.

During the Church Hall scenes the gap became the kitchen hatch.

And this is how the stage was viewed by the audience before the start of the show (photograph by Keith Morrison in the Lighting Box).

When the stage became the Church Hall the lighting changed .......

.... and was different from one scene to the next.

The chairs were stacked and the table stored by the six Calendar Girls at the end or within each Church Hall Scene with all the individual moves blocked into the individual scene. It was a bit of a nightmare remembering which chair you were moving and still manage to get your lines out.
Not the usual backstage crew changing the scene for this play!
