From Page To Stage : Museum Exhibition

Over two years ago the Group decided that it would be fun to share with the Shetland public how we take a production from the page to the stage. Finally the months of planning and designing came to fruition on Saturday, 17 February 2018 at 1pm when our President Martin Summers formally opened the Exhibition to an audience of current and past members and invited guests.

Austin Taylors wonderful photography shows the many costumes, photographs and props on display. Three partial sets from our last productions were built within the Gadderie: On Golden Pond, Blue Stockings and Mother Goose.

In opening the Exhibition President Martin Summers said it was a privilege to welcome everyone to this our latest production. He continued:

Over the past year we have worked with John Hunter and his team to develop this exhibition. It provides the public with an opportunity to engage with photographs, costumes, props and scenery gathered from our productions over the past 67 years since we started out in 1950.

We love bringing our plays, musicals and much treasured pantos to the stage for the enjoyment of our community. Often the public don't get to see all the work and volunteering that goes into each of these productions. We hope this exhibition takes you behind the curtains and gives a small glimpse into our theatrical world.

I look around the room and I am delighted to see members past and present here to enjoy the opening of this Exhibition. As a member that joined in 1998 it has been an honour to have the opportunity to look back through our archive. This Exhibition has brought it home to me just how many people in our community have been involved in our group and productions at the Garrison Theatre.  Islesburgh Drama Group's foundations are built on community and team work. It is due to those values that the Group continues to thrive in 2018 reinvesting into the membership and our future productions.

Shetland has a rich history of community action and the development of Islesburgh Drama Group is testament to the vision of its founding members and those here today that drive us forward.

Like many of our shows that we stage at our beloved Garrison Theatre it needs support from a wide range of individuals and organisations. Our thanks go to those that have assisted the group in bringing this Exhibition from Page to Stage including:

A.L. Laings, Anna-Lisa Anderson, Austin Taylor, Derek Henry, Islesburgh Community Centre, Izzy Swanson, Ian Pagulayan, Kathryn Lomax, Lerwick Community Council, Shetland Textile Museum and Tricia Cross.

My final thanks must go to my fellow Trustees, Caroline, David, Fiona, Jennie, Joyce, Karen and Val who have been working as part of a sub committee and have taken this original idea from concept to reality. I am sure you will agree that they have developed a show to be proud of.

Following the official opening Members and Past Members were able to browse the Exhibition.

A large crowed gathers for the opening.

As part of the Exhibition Directors and Stage Manager's scripts are on display which allow visitors an insight into a normally unseen area.

The Exhibition runs until Saturday 24 March.
